Madam Yoko (Mammy Yoko) Woman of Culture and Ambition

Madam Yoko (Mammy Yoko) was a brilliant and ambitious woman who used her friendship with the British to gain control of Kpeomende. However, in the end that very friendship may have destroyed her.

As a child, she was called Somo, but acquired the name Yoko at her Sande initiation where she attracted admiration for her beauty and graceful dancing. After an unsuccessful first marriage, Yoko became the wife of Gbenjei, Chief of Taima and although she couldn’t have any children, Gbenjei made Yoko his head wife. Eventually Gbenji died.

Then Yoko married Gbanyo Lango, a powerful war– chief at Senehun. In 1875, she saved her husband from a long imprisonment by the British because she made a personal plea to the Governor who was charmed by her beauty and feminine graces. Therefore, he agreed to release her husband from prison. Gbanyo found Yoko was very good at diplomatic missions to the British and to other Chiefs so this became her job. In 1884, after the death of her husband—Gbanyo and his successor,Yoko became the “Queen of Senehun”.

Within a few years she became ruler of all of the Kpaamende region(now 14 chiefdoms!) She did this through alliances (making friends with the different chiefs) using warfare and her ability to call on support of the friendly British troops, she could get them to help her fight to win the other chiefdoms. She established a famous Sandebush in Senehun where she trained girls from the area of Kpaamende. She sometimes gave the most beautiful girls in marriage to the sergeants of the frontier police or important chiefs.
.
When the British declared their protectorate in 1898, Madam Yoko Commanded her people to pay the new tax—but her sub–chiefs rebelled They held a secret meeting, blaming Yoko for “spoiling the country by supporting the British police, paying taxes and forced labour.” Yoko hid in the police barracks which withstood several attacks by her own subjects. She was later awarded a silver medal for her loyalty by Queen Victoria.

Madam Yoko ruled as the paramount chief in the new British Protectorate until 1906, when it appears that she committed suicide at the age of 55. If this is true, her reasons have never been altogether clear. A British official wrote that she had obtained all there was to be had in life—love, fame, wealth and power and felt there was nothing more to look forward to. However, her attempts to manipulate the support of her people, and perhaps she was bored and saw nothing challenging in Britain’s new and tightly controlled protectorate. ‪#‎wikipedia‬

Sierra Leone Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria Rtd. Major General Nelson Williams has been kidnapped in Nigeria

So sad to report that Sierra Leone Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria Rtd. Major General Nelson Williams has been kidnapped in Nigeria. I just spoke to our Embassy sources in Nigeria. Yes, he has been kidnapped sometime yesterday. He left the Sierra Leone mission in Abuja and went to attend a military graduation ceremony in Kaduna.

At 4am this morning, the embassy accountant received a strange phone call. It was the kidnappers. They placed Nelson-Williams on the line and after he identified himself to the accountant, the Kidnappers came back on the line and informed he was in their custody and they had kidnapped him and wanted a ransom demand of around 44 million Naira (about $150,000).

The kidnappers have now called the Embassy twice this morning threatening unsavory outcome if their ransom demand is not met. According to sources, one of the calls had Nelson Williams sounding very low and frightened.

The whereabouts of his driver (and those he was supposed to be with on the said trip), is presently unknown.

The exact details of how the kidnap happened is currently unknown. The Nigerian Police, Intelligence Service and Foreign Office in Nigeria are now working with the Sierra Leone Embassy in Abuja to investigate the matter.

The Nigerian military has also been informed. Nelson Williams was a former Head of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Where are you currently base – Salone, UK or other? UK

How would you describe yourself? I would describe myself as someone who is honest, caring, intelligent, hardworking, and ambitious. I have a great sense of humour. I am an easy going person and don’t get easily disturbed by down’s in my life. I am spiritual person. I Like to balance professional & family life. Professional life gives you exposure, confidence & sense of achievement. I believe the fulfilment one gets from one’s work is very important for well-being. I also enjoy travelling, watching movies, going out for dinner, and having great intellectual conversations!

Role in the Sierra Leone Community? Providing a platform for people to promote, develop and their experiences would be my role in the Sierra Leone community.

Your Challenges: My biggest challenge in life is to be the best I can and take each day as a lesson to get there. That’s what I believe as being the true meaning of being happy. achieving success and remain honest in my works and thinking. I am really one of the lucky girl in getting the success through my hard work and sincerity.

Your proudest moment to date: To be frank, my proudest accomplishment would have to be when I develop the Switch show. I have had been working up to this day to create a show that would have an impact on people. I love the fact that I can entertain and motivate people to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Receiving an acknowledge appreciation certificate also adds to my proudest achievement…

Who inspires you? My Dad was a real father to me. He taught me the values of life and how to be loving king and turn into a pretty well rounded girl and more recently, receiving acknowledgement certificate of the impact I have on the youths also inspire me to want to be as good of a role model as I can possibly be. At the moment, I think they are a major source of inspiration for me. But overall, I get inspiration from a desire to be the best I can be, not from a desire to emulate someone else. I believe inspiration can be gained from any situation. When reading a book or watching a movie or listening to a lecture. A person should have a open mind to look into any opportunity to get inspired. It also depends on the time and emotions we go through at a particular point of time .

Why did you decide to do what you are doing now? I believe that everyone is a storyteller, and everyone has a story-worth sharing. I remember when I was young and desperately needed to talk someone about my life and my struggles but no one was available at that time I could confine in….I’m using this platform to encourage and motivate people not to give up in life and keep pushing for greatness. Your existence on the planet is because you have a story to live out and tell. It’s what makes you unique as you develop your yourself. The Switch is a movement is at the heart of many struggles around the world — people want to share their voices, and shed light on the reality of their experiences.

If you were not doing your current job, what did you wanted to do as a second option? I’m currently studying BH Business Management at Coventry University… So am pretty much busy…. (Wink wink)

Do you have any future dates planned such as events that you might want the readers to know about? I’m currently working on my charity organisation call the “Switch Foundation” which in support to provide resources and motivate the youths in Sierra Leone to pursue their dreams and aspirations. I know People all around the world are facing so many challenges – hunger, insecurity, civil war and uncertainty about their future. I will be printing out t-shirts to raise money for the less privilege youths in Sierra Leone! Watch out t-shirts would be available soon for purchase!

Your advice and tips for individuals that want to follow your footstep/career path? I think it’s important to know your craft and be yourself! You have to be focused and have a clear vision of what is it you want to do. Of course, there will be many bumps along the way, but don’t get distracted by the zigzags in the road. Vision and passion are very clear; if you believe in something, other people will too. Chase your dream!
