BADEA Assures Support to Government of Sierra Leone

State House, Freetown, Wednesday 12 September 2018 – Director General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), H.E. Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, has assured President Julius Maada Bio that the bank will support his government to achieve its priority areas.

He said BADEA was closely following the initials steps already taken by the new administration, noting that they were pleased with the gains made so far. He added that the bank was determined to push for more Arab capital to invest in Africa and expressed hope that President Bio would help with the cooperation between Sierra Leone and the Bank.

“We have seen the progress you have made in your leadership and we are happy about your commitment to development and to boost the socioeconomic base of your country. As a Bank, we want to join you in the development process. We also want to see your priority programmes and wherein we can provide assistance,” he said.

President Bio said on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone he was appreciative of the Bank’s continued support to the country. He reiterated that his government inherited a very challenging economy but assured that he had since embarked on a rigorous internal revenue mobilisation drive that was helping the government support itself. He noted that his government was in need of quick support system as part of its short term development plans.

“This is a new government, genuinely committed to development but we want that development to be anchored on a very strong foundation. We have prioritised education because we think it is the best way to start the development process. We are starting a free education programme this month, solely from our own resources. Our partners have not been able to help so far because the previous government went out of the programmes which we are trying to manage as well as we can. We are ready to work very closely with the Bank and to make sure that there is transparency in everything we do and every penny given to this country will be well spent judiciously,” he ended.

BADEA is a multilateral financial institution created for the economic development of Africa. It is owned by 18 countries with its headquarters in Khartoum, Sudan. The Bank started its operations in Sierra Leone in 1974 and it is presently financing the implementation of three ongoing projects in the country: the Primary Health Care Support Project; the Rehabilitation and Expansion of Fourah Bay College and Assisting in Mitigating the Impacts of Flood and Landslide Disaster.

Free Education song leaves Kao Denero seriously embittered

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

What appears to be a clarion call for musicians to promote the Free Education initiative by the New Direction got Kao Denero frustrated and betrayed. The rapper takes his frustrations to Facebook in the past days. In his recent Facebook posts, he pointed out to many anomalies that hurt his nerves, including the release of two songs for the same purpose – he was featured in the second release, but not in the first one. Kao saw this as a deliberate ploy to thwart his efforts in the Free Education project song. The post reads, “Why release two versions of one dam song? Looks like my presence is always a threat to some of this Salone artist.

Who ever mixed my vocals off the beat deserves something else” – posted on the 19th August 2018. But Kao couldn’t say why his vocals were mixed ‘off the beat.’

The song (Go School) featured Emerson, K Man, Famous, Boss LA, Kao, Star Zee, Nigga Don and Drizilik. They were contacted by the Sierra Leone Government to promote the project with a reported fee of $ 150,000 paid to them. The Free Education project for pre-primary, primary and secondary pupils was later launched by President Bio at the Miatta Conference Center on the 20th August 2018.

To add to his rage and dissatisfaction, Kao did a worrying follow up post later on the 19th August which reads, “Tribalism is a reality,” with no further explanations, thereby leaving rooms for speculations. He might have probably felt discriminated against in this project.

The Black Leo CEO, who is currently staying in the United States to complete his ‘Last King’ album, commended the Sierra Leone government for launching the project, but in another post that day, he was able to tell which of his vocals or bars were omitted or mixed.
“With education woman nor go bluff pan you. E nor go take hin property make life tuff pan you lol.
Hmmmmmmm this are the lines they edited off my verse on the new education song. Somebody must have been very uneasy with those bars.
Oh Salone man” – Kao.

Many music fans believe that Kao Denero directed those disses or bars to one the artistes in the song, who has recently separated with his wife. Others believe it was untimely for him to diss in a project song. Whatever!

It can be recalled that Kao supported the ruling SLPP party in the runoff elections this year, but it appears that others are getting the bigger share. He considers himself as someone who helped brought the party to power and thus posted on the 21st August follows:

“Look lek say
This na monkey woke
Babu eat oh lol.”

It is his insinuation that he should be the one leading any music project put forth by the current administration, a party he openly endorsed during the elections as opposed to others. Kao believes that someone is taking away those privileges and as such warranted his earlier post – “Tribalism is a reality.”

Meanwhile, several other songs on the Free Education have been recorded by various artists, a combination song done by Vicky the Poet, Leonus De Genius & Chubby Asa, another by the KME All Stars, and more.

However, film makers have complained for not being included in the campaign. They expressed their dissatisfaction on social media, as they too are key players in entertainment.

Zainab Sheriff speaks out about the Big Sister Salone show

Zainab Sheriff speaks out about the Big Sister Salone show

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

The CEO of ZedZee Multimedia and Host of the upcoming epic ‘Big Sister Salone’ reality TV show in Sierra Leone – Zainab O. Sheriff has put the records straight over the public allegations and speculations on the show, as social media was stormed with mixed feelings over the past weeks. She shelves and refers those criticisms in an interview with this media as ‘nonsense.’

The most anticipated reality TV show has generated public concerns on the integrity and credence of the show. This came after the final audition and selection of the 12 contestants to live in the Big Sister Salone house. The idea behind the show is a brilliant and a smart one, as the show tends to promote and empower women. The show was themed ‘The Ella Koblo Gulama Drama (a women empowerment program) with the concept of upholding the values of one of Sierra Leone’s most celebrated heroines, Madam Gulama.

Most of the inmates were accused by the public of being ‘Slay Queens’, who lack the morale standard to be emulated by upcoming girls, and their lifestyles pose a serious threat to Madam Gulama’s hard earned personality.

The late Madam Ella Koblo Gulama was a strong woman who paved the way for many women in politics. She became the first female Paramount Chief of Kaiyamba Chiefdom, Moyamba District in Sierra Leone. In 1957, she became the first woman to be elected to the Legislature in West Africa. She was also appointed by Sir Milton Margai in 1963 as the first female cabinet minister in West Africa. She was a fighter, an advocate and a feminist. As a development oriented leader, she was responsible for nearly half of the development in Moyamba District before the civil war. Madam Gulama received the Member of the British Empire (MBE) and OBE awards in 1959 and 1965 respectively from Queen Elizabeth for her public services as a Minister without portfolio, and later received the Order of the Rokel award from President Ahmed Tejan Kabba. A role model worth emulating by Sierra Leonean women and girls. Bringing her name and life into public drama speaks volume of the integrity of such show.

The initiator and host of the Big Sister Salone show – Zainab Sheriff, is a huge celebrity in Sierra Leone; a model, an actress and a musician. She is one of Sierra Leone’s finest celebrities. She came to the limelight after she had represented Sierra Leone in a reality TV show – season 7 of the Big Brother Africa in 2012. Zainab has since then adopted a wild public life, with nudity as her major niche.

Speaking to this media, Zainab explains the concept behind the show. “The Big Sister Salone was a dream I had for the past four years. This is just the other way of boosting the entertainment industry,” she said. A concept she says, will involve everybody in the entertainment industry.

But one of the criticisms is that they selected people with huge social media following. “It appears that the organisers want to build on the participants’ popularity to market the show,” so opined Mustapha Sesay, a Freetown based journalist.

Kadiatu Mansaray on Facebook pointed out to a rivalry within the house. “Big Sisters Big Wahala. Two rivals na de house, this na film.”

Mariama Kamara was also dissatisfied with a particular participant selected to be in the house (participant’s name withheld here), “***** of all people, #BigSisterSalone”

The above comments and many others pointing to some of the participants as ‘Slay Queens’ were addressed by Zainab in an interview with this media.
“Yeah that’s nonsense talk. Some are calling them Slay Queens, I even heard someone calling them hounds. How can a woman call another woman hound without even knowing them, just by seeing their pictures”, she wondered.
” I know anytime someone wants to do something good, there’s always going to be some criticisms and some supports.”
“Sometimes those who criticise don’t do it out of hate, they do it out of ignorance. So we can always forgive them.”
“What I want to say is that you cannot start criticising something from the beginning – from the word go. You don’t even know it’s all about, you are merely criticising something you don’t know. Let them give us the support we need and see the direction we are going,” she said.

Asked what we’re the criteria for selection to the Big Sister house, she said they were looking for people with good personality, open-minded – “All sorts of women, the good, the bad, the ugly, the fantastic, the amazing, the quiet, the wild, etc put together in one house and see who comes out as the best.”
“It doesn’t matter how quiet you are, the house will change you to be able to speak up. It doesn’t matter how wild you are, the house will calm you, you will understand that your colleagues need to be heard too.”
It doesn’t matter how intelligent you are, you will know that there is something you don’t know. It doesn’t matter how dumb you are, you will understand that there is something you know that the next person doesn’t know.”
“So we’ve got all of them in the house,” she told us.

The show will start on the 15th September 2018 and it will last for one month. In their first five years plan, the Big Sister show will come up once every year. It will be broadcast on AYV TV and ITV. Other partners include Aramex, Africell and more.
Zane noted that Anthony Navo Jr – CEO of AYV Media Empire is the Co-Executive Producer of the Big Sister Salone show.

Zainab further explains that the elimination process is through public vote, where 3 inmates/participants with less votes will be eliminated every week.

Below are the selected 12 participants/housemates of the Season 1 of the Big Sister Salone (the Ella Koblo Gulama Drama, who will compete for a prize of Le 10,000,000 plus a brand new car:

(1) Shecknatu I. Bangura aka #Natu,

(9) Isha Marah aka #Starsha,
(10) Amira H. Kanu aka #SexyMira,
(11) Alima U. Sesay aka #Lima,
(12) Isatu M. Fofanah aka #Mamanie

“I wish people will know the hard work we are putting behind the scenes so that they will actually clap for us. I hope we are able to satisfy and meet their expectations. But we are going somewhere” – Zainab Sheriff.

Miss Sierra Leone 2018 backlashes – ‘The Fixed Queen?’

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

Freetown, Sierra Leone, a beauty queen was crowned at the Bintumani Auditorium on the 26th August 2018. Her name is Sarah Laura Tucker. She sailed from Bonthe Island all the way to the city to grab the crown from 15 other contestants. Tucker was the Queen of Bonthe – who possesses the tenets of a beauty queen.

Her victory raises public outcries from some quarters of the society. A similar tirade that befallen the 2016 Miss Sierra Leone, Aminata Bangura.

Social media was overwhelmed with dissenting views and opinions on the credence and mannerisms around the pageant.

Many people also blamed the Miss Sierra Leone Company Ltd for organising a poor event, with no value for money, and that the over Le 1,000,000,000 (One Billions Leones) wasn’t well spent for the event. Poorly coordinated – too many upheavals.

The grammatical inaccuracies and poor expressions from the contestants set social media ablaze. It reduces the value of the pageant.

It has always been a challenge to get aspiring beauty queens to articulate well and properly express themselves in English. “This is because pageantry is always perceived to be a career of mediocres and dropouts in Sierra Leone” – noted a Freetown entrepreneur.

It is a wakeup call for the organisers to attach values and more credence to the art. Pageantry is not only the display of beauty, but also the show of excellence and high intelllect. Getting the right contestants with the right minds in future events will help save the public from continuous embarrassment. This also underpin our performance at the global stage.

Jenneh Amara Bangali and Adonis Abboud were the key organisers of the pageant. The station Manager of A I Radio – John Conteh and former beauty queen and TV presenter of AYV Television – Stella Bangura, were the event hosts. A lawyer/cso, a medical practitioner, an accountant, etc, made up the judges’ panel, with a popular social media blogger – Vicky Remoe as the Chief Judge.

The pageant went on with the display of beauty, elegance, costumes, talent, intellect etc, with the crowd cheering. The dramas continued to unfold until a winner was crowned on Sunday morning.

In the award categories, the ‘Congeniality’ award was won by Miss Western Urban; the ‘Sport’ award was won by Miss Kono; the ‘Reading’ award was won by Miss Tonkolili; the ‘Beauty for Purpose’ award was won by Miss Koinadugu; the ‘Talent’ award was won by Miss Falaba; and the Best Fashion House award was won by Mira’s Design.

Miss Sierra Leone 2nd Runner – Up went to Esther William (Miss Western Urban), Miss Sierra Leone 1st Runner – Up went to Adama Lakoh (Miss Kailahun), and Miss Sierra Leone Winner went to Sarah Laura Tucker (Miss Bonthe).

The outcome of the Miss Sierra Leone 2018 pageantry stimulated concerns and allegations from the public of a stage managed pageantry. Many were of the opinion that Miss Bonthe didn’t deserve the crown because she won none of the 5 categories as outlined above and she was unable to answer the question directed to her. Others accused the First Lady – Madam Fatima Bio and Vicky Remoe (Chief Judge) of endorsing Miss Bonthe before the event. Others blame it on high political interference.

In a viral social media video recorded by one Aaron Zubairu who also claims to be a father to one of the contestants, he condemns the organisers and the government of being bias and promoting tribalism and regionalism. He said the contest was stage – managed in favour of Miss Bonthe in order to suit the comfort of the President who also hails from Bonthe District. The organisers were heavily criticised for breaking the tradition by inviting the First Lady to crown the new Miss Sierra Leone in place of the former Miss Sierra Leone who was present at the event. These and many other accusations from the public enmeshed the Miss Sierra Leone 2018.

Was there any other thing the eyes could not see?

In 2001, Annimaude Cole met her horrific death as a result of the controversies that marred the outcome of the 2001 Miss Sierra Leone. Similar controversies has already engulfed the 2018 Miss Sierra Leone pageant.

In the last two pageants, Margaret Murray (Miss Bo) won the Miss Sierra Leone 2014 and Aminata Adialin Banugura (Miss Portloko) won the Miss Sierra Leone 2016 pageant.

Miss Sierra Leone 2018, Sarah Laura tucker is expected to represent Sierra Leone at the Miss World 2019 pageant in China. Part of the prizes she won are a car, cash amounting to Le 12,000,000 (Twelve Million Leones) and other facilities.

Although some quarters of the public reject her crown, she remains the Miss Sierra Leone 2018.
