President Bio Engages Leadership of Political Parties for Inclusive Governance

State House, Freetown, Friday 1st March 2019 – His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has engaged the leadership of all political parties in his maiden consultative meeting as part of his inclusive governance approach to state governance.

Declaring the purpose of the meeting, the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Hon Sidie M. Tunis told the various political party representatives that he was instructed by the President to contact the leadership of all political parties for a meeting that will strengthen political engagement and collaboration.

Addressing the members of political parties, President Bio said that politics was now over and it was time for governance. He said that he believed all political parties would want the best for the country but that the routes to achieve that are different. President Bio said that the meeting was meant to show that politicians are not enemies but that all of them can work in the best interest of our country. “This meeting is to encourage dialogue among political parties for national development and social cohesion in the country,” President Bio stated.

President Bio also used the forum to update political parties on three recent national issues which have stirred up public debates: the appointment of the Electoral Commissioner – South, the Commissions of Inquiry and the declaration of the State of Emergency.
On the three issues, President Bio briefed the leaders of political parties that all of the decisions have been taken in the best interest of the country and that the forum will now strengthen the consultation and dialogue among political parties. “For instance, the Commissions of Inquiry is for all of us as politicians so that it can serve as a deterrent and draw a line under corruption,” President Bio asserted.

Explaining the rationale for the State of Emergency, President Bio emotionally explained that when he heard the statistics and listened to the stories of survivors, he felt compelled that something urgent needed to be done not just to call for action but to mobilise resources to support the survivors. He assured the leaders of political parties including representatives of the All People’s Congress that the State of Emergency was specific to address rape and sexual violence and not for politics.

Responding to President Bio, various senior members of other Political Parties including Hon. Minkailu Mansaray and Alhaji Osman Foday Yansaneh of the All People’s Congress, Dr Dennis Bright of the National Grand Coalition, Dr Jonathan Sandy of the National Unity and Reconciliation Party, Tamba R. I Rep Salone Interview with Victor Onie-Williams – a Model and Fashion Designer

Victor Onie-Williams is a Model and a Fashion Designer, he also owns a fashion brand called Onie’s Elegance. Victor says he chooses fashion because he can relate himself better with fashion and he uses fashion to expresses himself. According to Victor, the Fashion Industry in Sierra Leone is an eye opener and a lot of teenagers including young people are starting to take up roles and investing in Fashion.

He stated that some of the challenges he encounter as a model is that the market has limited opportunities and models are not being paid well and sometimes required to pay for their own travel expenses when hired for commercials or scenes for photo shoot even though they are not paid well.

As a Fashion designer based in Freetown, he says people do not value the work of Sierra Leone designers and prefer paying as much as $100 for a Ghanaian piece instead of paying Le250,000 for a Sierra Leonean designer often times people will say its expensive. Therefore they prefer supporting other countries rather than their own local content which includes fashion designers, model and makeup artist.

Victor says Sierra Leone models and fashion designers are trying their best in terms of marketing however there are more work needs to be done. He then pointed out the fact that people from the provinces are not benefiting enough from Fashion Designers and Models as the market is solemnly based in Freetown. He stated this mentality needs to change if fashion is to take a new turn both locally, nationally and international level.

Victor went on to say that, the Fashion industry in Sierra Leone needs the market and has a lot of creativity from both fashion designers and models as well as the need for people to start investing in the fashion industry. He says Fashion designers and Models should start investing in themselves also.

FC Kallon strokes hard, Ports Authority stunned and Old Edwardians thrilled

The drama of the Sierra Leone Premier League has touched every corner of Sierra Leone, and during these moments so far, the passions and emotions of fans are quite irresistible.

Coincidentally, Sunday, 17th February in the calendar of SLPL has been regarded as the day for the away teams. Diamond Stars, Ports Authority and Old Edwardians are all downed in their own turfs after ninety minutes each of footballing actions.

In the Diamond rich district of Kono, flamboyant FC Kallon ran riot just under twenty minutes of first half action as goals from Ibrahim Mansaray and Sallieu Tarawalle forced fans of Diamond Stars to storm the pitch of play and brought the match to an abrupt end with protests, their coach to be dismissed immediately.

Whatever the decision maybe from the Premier League Board Disciplinary Committee, FC Kallon sit at the league’s top with eleven points after five games played. Defeat for the Stars meant they sit on the twelfth place with two points after four matches.

Ports Authority football Club on Sunday evening at the Approved School Complex, were shown the best can be beaten after taken off their perch by a young but a zealous Anti Drugs side.

Star man Kandeh Turay strike in the forty third minute for Anti Drugs was quite enough to silence fans of Ports Authority who before their defeat boasts a hundred percent record.

With Sunday’s victory, Anti Drugs clearly shown why they were named giants killers after stopping FC Kallon and East End Lions to goalless draws and stunning the water fronts boys with this loan goal victory.

Ports Authority dropped down to third on the standings with nine points after four matches while Anti Drugs go seventh on the with five points after four matches played.

At the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Sunday evening, the match between Old Edwardians versus Freetown City football club generated adjectives like, intriguing, tenterhooks, industrious, fascinating, and the list goes on and on.

The “Old School Boys” tasted defeat for the second time this season from a better opponent in the night’s clash against Freetown City football club.

Being a shadow to the team that performed against RSLAF and FC Kallon, Old Edwardians could not keep up to the pace of their visitors throughout the night, probably disturbed by the loosing key midfield man, Aliyah Fofanah through injury in the early stages of the match. The Saints will go on to struggle in the midfield battle against a young City midfield masterminded by Denis Kargbo (Denis Tiago).

With chances squandered on either side of the field, the game’s decisive moment came in the eighty fifth minute as a persistent surge from City forced a defensive tangle in the Old Edwardians half gifting a penalty to Freetown City FC.

Substitute Santigie Conteh subsequently scores from the twelve yards. Despite a late resurgence, Edwardians could not restore parity thus providing the “Mayor’s Boys” their first victory after four outings.

Table toppers East End Lions pile more misery on struggling Bo Rangers, Central Parade dumped and Mighty Blackpool takes first three points

The twists and turns of the Sierra Leone Premier League is making the league quite interesting with every other match a suspect to anxiety and anticipation from the league’s passionate fans.

Saturday’s eye-catching matches were just proof to how far Sierra Leone and Sierra Leoneans have come in embracing the beautiful game.

East End Lions have gone to the top of the standings of the Sierra Leone Premier League for at least twenty four hours after defeating Bo Rangers by a goal to nil at the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Saturday night. The big money spending Killers had to wait until the seventy forth minute to have the match’s winner against bottom side, Bo Rangers, who put on a scintillating performance against their host.

The nerves and panic could be figured out from Lions fans whenever Rangers skipper, Morie Alieu sends a throw in the opposing penalty area.

Fans of Lions thought they did score in the twenty third minute as Musa Kamara (Tombo) blasted the ball right on goalkeeper Noah’s face after being let loose by the defenders of Bo Rangers. Another chance to take the lead from the twelve yards by Gibrilla Woobay after Alhassan Koroma have been fouled in the box, was thwarted away by goalkeeper Noah, who was Rangers sole saviour in a match of so many squandered chances.

After a goalless first half, the start of the second saw Bo Rangers being the better side in the first quarter of the half creating chances which panicked home fans in a less full arena.

Just two minutes inside the pitch of play, Solomon Toby’s second touch of the game could produce the match’s deciding moment, slotting home after a beautiful exchange play in the seventy forth minute.

The victory takes East End Lions to ten points after four matches played and a position at the top of the log for the next twenty four hours wishing a negative result for Ports Authority on Sunday evening against Anti Drugs could cement their lead at the top after the weekend.

After a victory away from home against Bo Rangers last Saturday, Central Parade felt the bitterness of loosing at home after being defeated by Kamboi Eagles by three goals to two on Saturday evening at the Parade Grounds in a match filled with fireworks and excitement. Kamboi Eagles scored in the fourth minute of the first half by Ron Gandi Williams, a goal cancelled a minute later by Alpha Conteh(Bedor) in the fifth minute.

Poor and naive defending could have cost either side conceding mid way through the match but the defenders blushes were countlessly salvaged by either side goalkeepers.

Two goals in nine minutes by the Eagles from Ibrahim Turay and Abu Bakarr Kanu in the twenty seventh and thirty sixth minutes ensured all three points for the visitors despite the host scoring a penalty late on in the second half of an intriguing all end affiars.

The win takes Kamboi Eagles to fifth position level on points with Central Parade who sit forth with a greater goal difference.

At the Lungi Central Stadium, East End Tigers suffered yet another home defeat to Mighty Blackpool gifting the guests their first goal and first three points after four games of searching.

Mohamed Paul Kai’s goal in the ninetieth minute handed care taker coach, Serry Turay and Mighty Blackpool an elusive victory taking them to four points after four matches.

On Sunday, Ports Authority play Anti Drugs football club in an Eastern derby, while Diamond Stars look set to entertain FC Kallon at the Koidu Town Mini Stadium in Kono.

Ports Authority go top, RSLAF collect first points, Freetown City downed and FC Kallon held

Foday “Ballack” Mansaray second half strike secured all three points for Ports Authority at the Kenema Town Field against host Kambio Eagles, ensuring the team’s 100% record is kept intact with a maximum of nine points.

The “Water Front Boys” are present leaders of the Sierra Leone Premier League after being the only side to accumulate a maximum of nine points, three goals scored and three clean sheets kept.

Kambio Eagles could not keep up with the pace of their last victory against East End Tigers on Saturday drawing blank in the first half of play against a Ports Authority team determined to defend. The defeat for Kambio Eagles means they sit seventh on the log with four points after three games played.

The Eagles next trip is at the Central of the Capital Freetown against third place Central Parade on Saturday, 16th February.
While Ports Authority, who will hope for another three points host Anti Drugs at the Approved School Complex the same day.

Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) Football Club, collects their first three points after three outings in the Sierra Leone Premier League after coming from a one goal nil to defeat Diamond Stars of Kono by two goals to one at the Wusum Mini Stadium in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone.

Momoh Conteh put the Stars of Kono in front in the 25th minute of play with a calm finish, but his goal was short-lived as Ibrahim Sillah capitalised on a golden chance that restore parity in the 28th minute. The two teams had to settled for a draw after forty five minutes of great footballing actions.

RSLAF, under pressure from their fans to deliver, applied the pressure in the second half putting their opponents under surge and creating chances.

The green boys search for an elusive win finally came to reality in the seventieth minute courtesy of Adonis Kamara breaking the hearts of Diamond Stars fans who have travelled all the way from the Diamond-rich district in the East of Sierra Leone.

Victory for RSLAF takes them to eighth on the log with three points after three games played while Diamond Stars are one place down in the tenth position.

RSLAF do not play until Wednesday, 20th February, when they play Anti Drugs FC at the Approved School Mini Stadium, while Diamond Stars welcome second place FC Kallon to the Koidu Town Field on Sunday, 17th February.

Premier league newcomers, East End Tigers, upset yet another favourite on home soil, Freetown City Football Club (FCFC) leaving it late to take home all three points courtesy of Bamba Sesay in the 84th Minute at the Brima Attouga Mini Stadium. The victory for the Tigers is their second in three matches all coming away from home.

Freetown City FC on the other hand have lost both their home matches salvaging a draw away to Diamond Stars on Friday, 8th February 2019. The defeat for the Mayor’s boys means they sit in twelfth position with one point while East End Tigers go fifth with six points after three games.

East End Tigers welcome desperate for points Mighty Blackpool at the Lungi Central Stadium on Saturday, 16th February, while City have another test on their hands with a tricky trip to old school boys, Old Edwardians at the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Sunday, 17th February.

FC Kallon look a shadow of the lively side which overpowered Mighty Blackpool on Sunday and winning two nil with a below par performance against a determined and flamboyant Old Edwardians side.

With over five changes from the side that defeated the Tiss Tass Boys on Sunday, FC Kallon could not find the rhythm and calm control which made them the better on sunday’s clash.

Old Edwardians determination to pursue forward was a huge testament to their great performance which made them by far the better side in Wednesday’s meeting.

The scorelines draw blank on both halves despite a lionshare of chances created goes to the visiting team.

The draw put FC Kallon second on the table with eight points after four matches played and travels to Diamond Stars on Sunday evening with a meeting at the Koidu Town Field, while Edwardians welcome Freetown City FC the same evening at the Siaka Stevens Stadium.

Sierra Leonean product – ‘CrimeSync’ wins the 2019 Innovating Justice Award in The Hague

Sierra Leonean product – ‘CrimeSync’ wins the 2019 Innovating Justice Award in The Hague

Sierra Leone has for the first time excel at the world stage for technology and justice innovation. This happens in The Hague when a Sierra Leonean product – CrimeSync wins the 2019 Innovating Justice Award.

It all started here in Freetown when the leading tech company in Sierra Leone, Fix Solution deployed a version of CrimeSync for the Sierra Leone Police and later form the Sierra Leone Correctional Service with funds from OSIWA. CrimeSync is a justice innovation that automates the criminal justice process from the inception of a case to the release of an inmate, providing a single view of the offender’s journey.
The National Inmates Identity Management System was launched at the Hill Valley Hotel in Freetown by government officials, Fix Solution and OSIWA on 15th January 2019.

In December 2018, CrimeSync won the regional competition of the Innovating Justice challenge held in Lagos as the most innovative technology in West Africa.

The annual Innovating Justice Forum is organised by the Hague Institute for the Innovation of Law (HiiL) and the Netherland’s government and it was held at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

The jury felt CrimeSync offered the most promising innovation with a high potential. Their web and mobile application allows justice sector stakeholders to organise their operations, collaborate and share information through electronic case management.

“We are helping the justice sector stakeholders deliver justice in a fast and fair manner,” explains Sorieba Daffae, the CEO and co-founder of the company.

According to the jury, Crimesync “is dealing with one of the fundamental rights people have. It has potential in terms of scalability and replicability across many countries in the world, bringing transparency to an often-compromised system.“

HiiL organises this annual competition to promote these sort of justice innovations. The competition drew over 1000 innovators. The 12 finalists who pitched to the conference predominantly came from East, West and South Africa, including India and Ukraine.

The final 12 participants were originally weeded out through regional competitions. The 12 competitors at the final stage had received further funding and undertaken training in the Hague.

An official from the Dutch government announced the winners – giving, in the process, due acknowledgement to the role of The Netherlands in promoting this undertaking. The diversity of the first three underlined the creativity of the entrants.
First position was CrimeSync, a product from Sierra Leone.
Second position was Haqdarshak from India, and third was South African Creative Contracts.

A country known for its dark images of war and diseases is now gradually becoming a tech hub for providing technological solutions in the justice sector.
